There is hope for teens and young adults struggling with substance abuse in Chapel Hill, NC.

Young people’s substance use is a complicated problem that affects not only the young person but also their family. These developmental years are a crucial time, full of difficulties and stress. Navigating through all of the emotions related to your teen or young adult child’s substance use can be difficult on your own. There is nothing more frightening than watching our child self-destruct.

Treating this problem as a family concern, I work with the young person individually AND with the parents – potentially both individually and as a couple in order to support each person in the system and to better understand the dynamics that are involved. We will also work as a family to negotiate changes or difficult communication that is necessary. Change occurs more quickly when all the members of the family are learning the same things about what is helpful and what is enabling. Having a guide lowers the emotional intensity level in the family and gives everyone a sense of confidence in having a shared plan.

Teen Substance Abuse in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Young people use drugs for a variety of reasons, such as wanting to try something new, dealing with stress or mental health problems, or peer pressure. Unfortunately, what often starts as an experiment can turn into an addiction that affects every part of their life, from their health and relationships to how well they do in school. When this happens, teens need a strong support system by their side. This system could include family, friends, teachers, and other professionals. With this support system in place, they have someone to talk to about their feelings, concerns, and need for help.

Therapy is an important part of recovery for both the young person and their family members. Therapy attempts to get to the bottom of the issues and understand any emotional contributors to substance use. It introduces healthier coping and communication skills.

At Serenity4U, I offer therapy for young people struggling with this issue and their family members. You’ll find that my space is welcoming and safe, encouraging open communication and understanding.

Common Questions About Teen Substance Abuse

Teen substance use is incredibly common, and it can affect teens in nearly every area of their lives. I have answered some questions I receive regularly about teen substance use and my work as a therapist.

Hidden
What is considered teen substance use?
Teen substance use refers to when a young person uses drugs or alcohol in a way that interferes with their health, behavior, school performance, relationships, or daily functioning. It includes experimentation or recreational use when it becomes problematic, harmful, or potentially addictive.
Why is substance use among teens especially concerning?
Adolescence is a critical period of brain development, mental health, social growth, and identity formation. Substance abuse during this time can affect long-term cognition, emotional, and behavioral outcomes.
What signs should caregivers or parents look for?
Some warning signs include changes in mood or behavior, decline in school performance or attendance, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Your teen may have changes in their friend group and become more secretive or defensive.
How does therapy work to help with substance use?
I work with the teen individually to explore what is going on beneath the substance use to build healthier coping and communication skills.
Do parents engage in therapy, too?
Yes! Parents and caregivers are a key part of the process. Family involvement may include learning about what helps versus what enables, improving communication, and negotiating changes in family patterns.
