When you grow up with an alcoholic parent, it changes who you become. Statistically, adult children of alcoholics are more likely to become alcoholics, marry an alcoholic, or do both. All of these are bleak options, and I want to change this narrative.
I want you to know that these are not the only options. But these statistics offer a glimpse into how profoundly your childhood experiences craft our emotional world, even without being conscious of it. Every adolescent I have worked with who had to cope with an alcoholic parent is simply awaiting any opportunity to escape from that madness. They often believe that if they can get away, then they will be just fine.
Ironically, each of the adult children of alcoholics that I have worked with has painfully learned that this belief was simply not true, in spite of their best intentions and efforts. Instead, they see that they have made unconscious choices that have caused themselves and others tremendous amounts of pain without ever having understood (on the front end) the ramifications of what they are choosing. Hence, if they are lucky, they come to therapy to attempt to gain an understanding of how they got there and hopefully create a sense of agency for their future.
