Nobody chooses to struggle with addiction.
Believe it or not, nobody drinks or drugs themselves into addiction. We either HAVE the genetic vulnerability to addiction or we don’t. Those who ARE genetically vulnerable simply have a different experience with their drinking or drugging than the average person does. Most people today do drink or do drugs, to one extent or another, but only 10% of people are likely to have the genetic vulnerability.
It is really important to become clear about whether you are using substances to self-medicate OR whether you are, in fact, vulnerable to addiction and are experiencing a loss of control of your use. The most helpful treatment depends on being able to answer that question. Substance abuse therapy offers you the opportunity to get objective feedback about this question so that you can evaluate your own relationship with substances accurately.
I help those struggling with substance issues in the Chapel Hill, North Carolina area find more effective coping methods, recognize triggers and high-risk situations, think proactively, manage relationships, and plan a life that supports recovery.
Substance abuse therapy allows people to address fundamental questions and concerns in a safe and nonjudgmental atmosphere.
A variety of modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), for example, can be especially successful at assisting those stuck in challenging negative thought patterns to develop skills to resist urges and avoid relapse.

What are some signs that might indicate I have a substance abuse problem?
There are many signs that can help you recognize a substance use problem. If your efforts to reduce or manage your substance use are not successful, that can alert you to a problem. If you struggle with responsibilities at work, home, or school because of substance use, you would benefit from getting help. If substance use affects your relationships and keeps you from participating in social activities, that’s another sign. Becoming tolerant of a substance and having to use more of it or use it more frequently for the same outcome, as well as experiencing withdrawal symptoms, are signs you need help with substance use.
How do people get to the point of having a substance use disorder?
There are many catalysts that may lead to substance use, but the progression from substance use to problem use typically follows a specific pattern: experimental or prescription use, occasional use, heavy use (routinely, with zero or a few days off of the substance), and substance use disorder, at which point you may be using every day and even several times in one day.
